Maps and Mapping of Norway, 1602–1855, the first scholarly cartobibliography of the country, presents a thorough and systematic survey of the subject. Each map is described in an illustrated entry that discusses the cartographer, publishing history, and content of the map. To the extent practicable, all states, variants, and editions of the maps have been identified and differentiated.

The present volume complements the author’s previous cartobibliography, Printed Maps of Scandinavia and the Arctic, 1482–1601, in several respects. It begins in 1602, with the first printed map of Norway, and focuses on a single Scandinavian country. The cut-off date was chosen to include the blossoming of Norwegian cartography during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.

Additional features:

• More than 300 illustrations, most in color, including many rare and uncommon maps
• Introductory chapter on the development of cartography in Norway
• The first translation into English of the atlas text corresponding to the first map showing Norway separately
• Inclusion of regional maps by early major cartographers: Blaeu, Janssonius, and Sanson
• Three special essays–on county maps, route maps, and local maps–to provide a flavor of the richness of maps of Norway that lie outside the formal boundary of the cartobibliography

Anyone interested in maps of Norway, which includes almost all Norwegians, will find Maps and Mapping of Norway a treat for the eye and mind. As the de facto standard in its subject, it will serve as a valuable reference for map collectors, dealers, specialists, enthusiasts, and readers with connections to Norway and Scandinavia.
