"Carte Partucliere Des Costes De L'Afrique Qui Comprend Le Royaume De Gualata &c. Levee Par Ordre Expres Des Roys De Portugal, Sous Qui On En A Fait La Decouverte". A detailed chart of European interests on the African coasts (today Mauritania). The chart includes the "Royaume De Gualata" with the "I et Castelo de Arguim" (Arguin) that was under dispute around the time of the map's publication. Arguin was a colony of Brandenburg-Prussia from 1685 to 1721. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to visit the island in 1443. The Dutch seized control in 1633 and there was also a brief period of English rule. France took control in 1721, lost the island to the Dutch in 1722 and regained it in 1724. In 1728 the island reverted to the control of the Mauritanian tribal chiefs. According to this map's title cartouche it was produced for the Portuguese. A cross European publication (French text, published in the Netherlands for the Portuguese) at a time of European upheaval and heightened interest in the area depicted. Heightened with gold. A little oxidisation to the original green colouring.
