A finely engraved chart from the "Petit Atlas Maritime" of the Bay of Pensacola and its surrounding coastlines. The title appears in a cartouche at lower left and a compass rose confirms north is oriented to the left of the page. Bellin (1703-1772) was one of the most important and prolific French cartographers of the mid-eighteenth century, in the service of the French Hydrographical Office. He was appointed the first Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine, and also Official Hydrographer to the French King. His "Petit Atlas Maritime" contained some 580 detailed charts in all and were finely engraved and produced, setting a high standard of accuracy.
