Map Of The Kingdoms Of Sweden And Norway
|
An infrequently seen map of these Scandinavia regions by the English mapmakers John and Carrington Bowles, based on Homann's map of the region of some years earlier. Bowles has used Homann's map as his geographical model, but has produced his own depiction of the region, which is much more 'English' in style and lacks the heavy engraving and detailed vignette views that one might normally associate with the Homann map. Nevertheless, Bowles' map is still attractive and decorative in its own right with the title cartouche at upper right surrounded by elegantly engraved flora. The geographical detailing is clear with elegant textual engraving that is easy to read. Original colour defines boundaries and much of the Baltic States coastline from Bremen in Germany to St Petersburg in Russia. A table at lower right lists the 'methodical divisions' of Sweden and Norway. An attractive and informative map.
