The South Eastern Portion Of Australia
|
This map is compiled from colonial surveys and "from details furnished by exploratory expeditions" and forms one of the period's most detailed maps of this region. The nineteen counties around Sydney are delineated in some detail with settlements named and physical feature shown. Textual notes also make reference to the land - whether it is 'low and woody' or 'Cyprus brushes & good plains'. A key beneath the title describes and dates the routes of travellers into the interior. The map extends from Brisbane in the north round to Kangaroo Island, although the focus is very much surrounding Sydney. An inset map at top left shows Australia as a whole with Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales named. Finely engraved and with minor centrefold repair, but nevertheless a quite acceptable example of an interesting map by this important British mapmaker.
