Typus Frisiae Orientalis. ...

A good impression of this finely engraved map of East Frisia, with Emden and Norden forming the major towns of this important trading region. The river Ems dominates the map and the proliferation of towns and windmills on its banks and tributaries highlights its role in the local region. An inset at lower right depicts the floods of Christmas Day, 1277, which have submerged many towns and villages - the geography of this inset plan is quite different to the geography depicted in the main body of the map. The inset is surmounted by Neptune - further evidence of the river's power and respect it should be afforded. The map is also embellished with a fine title cartouche at lower right including reference to Ubbo Emmius, a local cartographer and historian (1547-1625) on whose map this example is based. Two exuberant coasts of arms sit in opposing corners at the top of the map and further decoration in the form of sailing ships and compass roses is apparent. A wonderfully artistic map showing geography, history and the changing coastline.
