A detailed plan of the city of Nagasaki with its port and environs which, according to the key, has 35 bridges and 61 temples. Geographical detail within the city is clearly depicted with some temples depicted pictorially and the streets clearly shown. The map was published in Kaempfer's 'History of Japan' and became the model for European maps of the city for many years to come. Scheuchzer's map is oriented to the southeast and this too was emulated by other European mapmakers for many years to come. This particular edition of the map was published in Rostock - one of the less usual places of publication. The lower half of the sheet depicts Japanese coins in gold, silver and copper. An alluring map of an alluring city.
