La Figure Du Monde Universel
|
A famous woodblock map by David Kandel, whose initials appear at lower left and identify the map as the second "modern" world map to be used in Sebastian Munster's encyclopaedic "Cosmographia". This was the standard view of the world until the publication of Ortelius' map in 1570. "Terra Florida" (North America) is almost cut in two by the Straits of Verrazano, while "Zipangri" (Japan) appears in a very narrow Pacific Ocean. The oval projection is surrounded by clouds and windheads. French text indicates an actual publication date between 1556 and 1568.
