[Frontispiece] The Universal Magazine
|
An allegorical frontispiece to "The Universal Magazine" showing the figure of Wisdom overlaid on a map of the British Isles. The "Universal Magazine" was published monthly in London and contained some of the most attractive of all magazine maps, often incorporating decorative title cartouches and occasionally executed in wash colour. The number of plates in other magazines of the period increased greatly in competitive response to those plates being produced in the "Universal Magazine". Here "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get Wisdom: get Understanding: forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee; love her and she shall keep thee, and bring thee to honour." Protective margins added on each side.
