A large and magnificent map of the eastern hemisphere showing Europe, Africa, Asia and the emerging knowledge of the Pacific including Cook's discoveries and the Bass Strait. The map is printed on two sheets joined and appears to be one hemisphere from Aaron Arrowsmith's "Map Of The World On A Globular Projection, Exhibiting Particularly, The Nautical Researchs Of Capt. James Cook ..." This separately published world map was first published in 1794 and, as well as a printed title, also had a dedication to Alexander Dalrymple. The map was re-issued with additions in 1799 and 1808. Our example has paper watermarked 1801 and cartographic detail includes the Bass Strait (discovered 1797). An 1808 edition of the map illustrated on the David Rumsey website shows that the title and accoutrements were pasted on to the map, suggesting that the hemispheres may have been printed separately. This may be a proof state of the final edition of the map, prior to the addition of the separately-printed title and dedication. Examples of Aaron Arrowsmith's work are difficult to find and this in an intriguing example. Expert repairs to old folds and areas of paper weakness.
