A detailed chart of the east coast of England and Scotland with an inset chart of the Tyne up to Newcastle. The van Keulen family were the leading chart-makers in the Netherlands from about 1680 until 1885; despite being a private firm, for most of this time they were essentially official chart-makers to the Dutch Admiralty. The firm was established by Johannes Van Keulen (c.1654-1715). He enrolledin the Amsterdam booksellers' guild in 1678 and employed the noted chart-maker Claas Jansz Vooght, who
contributed the mathematical and chart-making expertise that the firm became noted for. While Johannes was essentially a publisher, Gerard (his son) was an accomplished chart-maker, who was appointed official hydrographer to the Dutch East India Company in 1714.
