An infrequently seen map of the Americas showing California as an island. This hemispheric projection, with an outline map of the Americas at its centre, illustrates an enlarged sphere and also one at a 23 degree tilt to the interior sphere. The map was published in "Introduction A La Geographie En Plusieurs Cartes Avec Leur Explication" by Moullart-Sanson, a lesser known member of the Sanson family and grandson to Nicolas. A fine example of the French scientific approach to cartography, in contrast to the lavish, decorative endeavours of the Dutch mapmakers some years earlier.
