Vera Effigies Et Delineatio Insulae Sanctae Helenae ...
|
Jan Huygen Van Linschoten's "Itinerario", from which this map comes, was first published in 1596 and is seen as one of the greatest travel books of any period. The book documents much information concerning the Portuguese colonies and their trade at a time when both the Dutch and English maritime trading nations were becoming established and capable of competing for this trade, which had, hitherto, been controlled strictly by the Portuguese. Linschoten's map of St Helena was engraved by Baptista van Doetechum, whose name appears in the lower right corner. A tile runs in a bold cartouche along the top of the map looked upon by a cherub holding an armillary sphere. Decorative sailing ships and elaborate compass roses adorn the waters around this important trading island. A most stimulating map.
