An interesting example of this important map having been, originally, coloured in the "en grisaille" style - the landmasses in typical green, mauve and yellow but with the decorative features washed over in a uniform grey. The result, with little other colour used, is of a most distinctive and elegant effect. Nicolas Visscher's map, itself a derivative of Blaeu's wall map of 1648, proved most influential being copied by numerous other Dutch mapmakers duing the following years. The map shows a flat-topped California island, Tasman's discoveries in the Pacific and one Great Lake. Inset spheres above and below the cusps show north and south poles. The finely designed decoration around the map, by Nicolas Berchem, illustrates classical scenes set against images of the four elements. Negligible old paper wear and evidence of creasing but overall a good example of this important and artistic piece.
