Erasmus, The Philosopher

An attractive woodcut portrait of Desiderius Erasmus, his pen poised, set in Latin text from an edition of Sebastian Munster's "Cosmographia". The portrait is based on an oil painting by Hans Holbein the Younger. Erasmus was born in Rotterdam in 1469 and was to become one of the greatest scholars and Dutch humanists of the century. He wrote on ecclesiastical subjects as well as more human ones and this portrait shows him at work, dominating both the page in which he is situated and the page on which he writes.
