A fine example of one of the earliest printed maps of London. Copied from Frans Hogenberg's map of 1572, Belleforest's map is the first derivation from the seminal map of London. The map has been engraved from a woodblock, a contrast to the Hogenberg copperplate, affording Belleforest's map a most distinctive appearance. The engraving is clear and concise, here with attractive later hand colour. The map was published in "La Cosmographie Universelle De Tout Le Monde", a rare Parisian version of Sebastian Munster's "Cosmographie ....", which itself only incorporated a plan of London from 1598.
