Regnorum Magnae Britanniae, Sive Angliae Scotiae ...

Regnorum Magnae Britanniae, Sive Angliae Scotiae ...

A detailed and very decorative map of the British Isles with an inset of the Orkney Islands (incidentally, a method still used in modern maps of the British Isles). Finely engraved the map has a large titlepiece at top right surrounded by cherubs and topped by the Royal coat-of-arms. The map first appeared, although with a much altered appearance, c.1690 with Carel Allard's imprint. The first state of the map displayed portraits of William and Mary and is assumed to have been prepared shortly after their accession to the throne in 1689. Mary died soon afterwards in 1694 and Allard had the plate extensively reworked. The engraver Lauwerens Schern added the inset map of the Orkneys and replaced the title cartouche and royal portraits. This is the third and final state of the map, published c.1730 with the imprint of Covens and Mortier replacing that of Allard, both in the title cartouche and along the bottom of the map.
