The South Part Of Great Britain, Called England And Wales
|
A large-scale and detailed map by the prolific, and nowadays very popular, mapmaker Hermann Moll, with original outline colour clearly emphasising county boundaries. Indeed, Moll's seemingly single-minded quest to educate is borne out in the wealth of information shown, from roads (including many not mentioned by Ogilby, Moll is keen to assert) to the number of members of parliament per town. Tables of towns on either side of the map provide further information such as specific market-days, whilst a thorough description of the waters surrounding England reflects London's growing importance as a chart producing centre. With a large allegorical cartouche at upper right, and overall compositional balance, this map may be seen as a highpoint of early eighteenth-century English mapmaking.
