Novi Orbis Pars Borealis, America Scilicet ...
|
A good example of one of the earliest maps to concentrate on North America alone. Johannes Bussemacher engraved this copy of Gerard De Jode's very rare map for Matthias Quad's "Geographisch Handtbuch". De Jode had condensed information for the map, which excludes the extreme northwest, from current wall maps and included recently published detail from the maps of John White and Le Moyne. The map shows an early America, a forested and mountainous country, and has a detailed panel of text below describing the history of the region.
Quad was the most prolific of a small group of mapmaker/publishers active in Cologne at this time and his work has a style quite distinct from that of the Low Country mapmakers more often encountered.
