An interesting image of the world taken from a north-polar viewpoint, with unshaded areas indicating those parts of the world which have accepted the Catholic faith (and the shaded areas presumably cover those who dwell in darkness). A symbolical vignette enforces this meaning. Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) was a Jesuit, geographer, and professor of mathematics in Munich. His "Atlas Novus", in which this map appeared, was published in eight volumes between 1702 and 1710. It was an unusual publication featuring maps of all areas of the known world and indicating their religious tendencies with an emphasis on promulgating the Catholic church and faith, as here.
