Plan Of The Plymouth Annual Regatta 1825
|
A most unusual and charming plan, whose origin remains undetected, of a regatta course in Plymouth Sound. The plan names the many bays of the Sound along with other landmarks at the Dock Yard at Devonport. The breakwater is also depicted and a scale in nautical miles appears at the top of the map. A manuscript date is given as 1825 next to the title. However, it was not until 1827 that the "Port of Plymouth Royal Clarence Regatta Club" was formed, later to be renamed "The Royal Western Yacht Club of England". With evidence of old folds it would seem likely this plan appeared in a locally published guide to the event.
