L'Isole Piu Famose Del Mondo ...
|
Small folio. Three parts in one volume. Engraved architectural and allegorical title, pp.[xxv], pp.202 + 47 half page copperplate engraved maps and plans by Girolamo Porro in text (light marginal spotting on occasion and light browning), woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials. This is the second edition of Porcacchi's isolario containing 47 maps of parts of the world, including new maps of the New World not present in the first edition - Cuba and Temistitan (Mexico) amongst others - and, of course, Porcacchi's version of Zaltieri's very important map of North America - the first of the landmass as a single geographic entity. The maps in general are beautifully engraved and fine examples of sixteenth-century Italian cartography. Eighteenth-century vellum with title stamped in gilt on spine; some worming, a few light stains, corners rubbed, lower front joint cracked. Bookplate of Ludovici Belmonte pasted inside front cover.
