Speed's map of is notable for several reasons: the inset plan of Caernarvon and its impressive castle, a ferocious naval battle occurring in the Irish Sea, the figure of Neptune astride his watery steed, and Snowdon (the highest mountain in England and Wales) is shown unnaturally large in comparison with the surrounding hills. John Speed (1552-1629) is arguably the most famous English cartographer of any period as a result of his atlas "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine", in which this map was published.
