A New Mape Of Ye XVII Provinces Of Low Germanie ...
|
Speed's distinctive carte-a-figures map of the Low Countries, with north orientated to the right. Information on towns, provinces, history and contemporary dress is presented with flair and imagination, within a pleasing design. In old, but not necessarily original, colour. Margins ruled in red, something occasionally found on London issued maps of 1675-1676. John Speed (1552-1629) is arguably the most famous English cartographer of any period as a result of his atlas "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine", the first atlas of the British Isles. Speed also produced the first world atlas by an Englishman, entitled "The Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World" (1627). In addtion to the decorative nature of Speed maps, regular atlas copies have two pages of English text printed on the reverse, giving a charming description of life in the early seventeenth century of the area shown.
