First Italian edition of Philippe Buache and Joseph Nicolas De L'Isle's map of 1752. An important and fascinating map combining scientific observation, on one hand, with fanciful theoreticising on the other. The map shows the tracks of the recent Russian explorers, Alexei Tchirikow and Vitus Bering, with the cartography of the French theoretical school of northwest American geography. The Great Bay or Sea of the West, supposedly discovered by Juan De Fuca in 1592, is shown with its islands and the fictitious discoveries of Admiral De Fonte are shown in lighter shades, rather than black ink, acknowledging the uncertainty over his reports of myriad archipelagos and channels heading east toward Hudson Bay. A good example of a fascinating synopsis.
