Two maps on one plate. The upper shows the western coast of New Spain around the town of Culiacan and the Spanish settlement of St. Michaelis; in the later English text version of the "Theatrum ..." the region is described with some brevity and lack of enthusiasm thus "The region is indifferently furnished with things necessary. Out of the mountaines is digged great abundance of silver. The inhabitants are addicted to war and robbery". The second map depicts a better known region, the northern islands of the West Indies, showing Cuba, St. Domingo and the Bahamas in good detail. Van Den Broecke suggest that Ortelius drew this second map himself using a variety of sources including Mercator's world map and other maps by Guttierez and Alonso De Santa Cruz. There is French text on the verso of this attractive example.
