A scarce re-issue of Christopher Saxton's important map, the first printed of these counties. This example is, "Amended With Many Additions By P.Lea" and was republished by him over one hundred years after Saxton's first issue. Lea claimed Saxton's plate had already been amended by about 1665, although there is uncertaintya s to the author of these up-dates. This plate shows the addition of inset plans of Northampton, Peterborough, Bedford, Oakham and Huntingdon. It also includes roads and heraldry in place of the original Elizabethan title cartouche and decoration. Lea's atlas was an attempt to compete with Speed's still popular "Theatre ...", although in both cases the cartography was very out of date. A good impression of this interesting map.
