An attractive and detailed map of Chesire. The map was published in Gough's enlarged version of William Camden's "Britannia" (in 1789 and 1806) and also in the "New British Atlas", as for this example. The map was printed for John Stockdale, Piccadilly, by J.Nichols and son and was engraved by
John Cary. John Stockdale was an important London publisher who also edited and published the works of Dr Samuel Johnson. Cary's maps are of a very high technical standard, being finely engraved, but are also designed to be functional, striving for accuracy rather than decoration.
