An attractive plan of Preston with a vignette view of the town at lower left. A gazetteer of churches, chapels and public buildings is given lower right with a mileage scale in yards. Beneath the printed edge of the map are the names of the engraver, "Franks & Johnson", while Thornton's name is also given as surveyor. The map was surveyed for "Baines' Lancashire" and was published by W.Wales & Co. in Liverpool.
