Cosmography In Four Books ...
|
"Cosmography, in four books. Containing the chorography and historie of the whole world, and all the principal kingdoms, provinces, seas and isles thereof... With an accurate and approved index... much wanted and desired in the former, and now annexed to this last impression. Revised and corrected by the author himself immediately before his death. London, printed for Philip Chetwind, 1670". Folio. Engraved Tp, Tp, pp.[x], pp.1098 with four folding maps of each of the know continents, ff.[i], pp.[xlii] with pp.4 bookseller's catalogue inserted at end. The printed title appears in red and black, early manuscript annotations are found in the text (mostly marginal) and there is a small paper flaw in pp.259/60 with loss of a few letters. Contemporary calf, rebacked, upper joints lightly cracked. The maps of each continent are in the series begun in 1652 by Henry Seile for earlier editions of "Cosmography...", and which include a distinctive map of the New World showing California as an island. The book ends with an appendix on the 'unknown parts of the world. Especially Terra Australis Incognita, or the Southern Continent.' A fascinating explanation of the state of geographic knowledge at this time.
