A scarce and seemingly separately published portrait of a young George III, who reigned from 1760 until his death in 1820. The portrait pays homage to the monarch's military endeavours throughout the world, and thus his power. The king, seated upon his horse, dominates the foreground of the portrait whilst in the middleground a composite battle scene references the role of George III in a number of conflicts throughout his reign. In the background the City of London is clearly recognisable and London Bridge is shown with buildings (artistic licence - these were removed in 1758-62). A symbolic title cartouche below the engraving, with text in both German and Latin, completes what is a reverential engraving stooped in the traditions of the genre. The signature of Johann Lorenz Rugendas (1775-1826) appears at lower left, suggesting this edition of the plate may have been published in this format some years after it was initially prepared. Johann Lorenz came from a family of noted and active engravers; he was the great grandson of Georg Philipp Rugendas I and was father to Johann Moritz Rugendas who, encouraged by Alexander Humboldt, is particularly noted for his drawings of Latin America. Trimmed close on all sides, margins added.
