A scarce and topical historical engraving of the Dutch and Spanish fleets in Patanca Bay, Cuba. First published as a separately issued broadsheet recording the events in 1628 when the Dutch buccaneer Pieter Hayn captured the Spanish silver fleet. Vignette portraits of General Pieter Hayn and Admiral Cornelius Long overlook the scene with a map of Cuba inset at lower left. A numbered key identifies the fleets and 20 ships with their captains. The seventeenth century was a period of continuous encroachment by the Dutch, British and French on the Spanish American empire, and as a result of this success, the buccaneer Hayn was made an admiral.
