An attractive chart of the east coast from Orfordness to Flamborough Head with north orientated to the right of the page. A pastoral cartouche reflects the enormous importance of sheep-rearing to the East Anglian economy of the time. Skilfull reinstatement to an area of loss on the lower right hand margin. The Van Keulen family were the leading chart-makers in
the Netherlands from about 1680 until 1885; despite being a private firm, for most of this time they were essentially official chart-makers to the Dutch Admiralty. The firm was established by Johannes Van Keulen (c.1654-1715). He enrolled in the Amsterdam booksellers' guild in 1678 and employed the noted chart-maker Claas Jansz Vooght, who contributed the
mathematical and chart-making expertise that the firm became noted for. In the space of about four years Van Keulen produced the "Nieuwe Groote Lightende Zee-Fakkel", a five volume sea-atlas, which was the largest and finest world sea-atlas of the day. Each volume was devoted to a different region of the World, and both the volumes and charts were often up-dated,
by Johannes, and his successor, his son Gerard. While Johannes was essentially a publisher, Gerard was an accomplished chart-maker, who was appointed official hydrographer to the Dutch East India Company in 1714.
