Universale Della Parte Del Mondo Nuovamente Ritrovata
|
A good example of this important map from Ramusio's "Navigationi ..." - one of the best depictions of the New World of the period. Although entirely lacking placenames on North America's east coast between 'Terra De Bacalaos', referring to the cod fishing of Newfoundland, and La Florida, the coastlines are relatively accurate, especially for the Gulf, Central and South America, and for the west coast where the mythical cities of Cibola and Quivera are located. This is the second block of two to be used, the first having been destroyed in a printing-house fire in 1557, and is thought to have been prepared by the influential Giacomo Gastaldi. Negligible small stains, nevertheless a very acceptable copy of a scarce map.
