New Map Of England And Wales, With Part Of Scotland ...
|
57 (possibly of 62 or of 66 including Ireland) delicately engraved and etched sheets of mainland England, Wales and southern Scotland. The sheets are unattributed and without provenance but are possibly trial proofs for a new edition of John Cary's "New Map Of England & Wales, With Part Of Scotland ...". This is usually found as a bound volume, rarely as a mounted wall-map. First published in 1794, this example would seem to be the 2nd edition of 1816. Fordham (p.47) makes reference to an advertisement of 1817 for a new edition on new plates, but this does not seem to have come to fruition. The watermarks on the sheets are English and date from 1807 to 1811. The 1794 edition of Cary's map was probably the first map of England to be drawn on the Greenwich meridian.
