Recens Edita Totius Novi Belgii, In America Septentrionali ...
|
An attractive example of Matthaeus Seutter's map of New England, the last engraved in the sequence of maps derived from the Jansson/Visscher prototypes of the mid-seventeenth century, but the first to indicate, with printed lines, the State boundaries. Other changes were made to the detail and a new, very large cartouche shows natives and gods presenting tribute to the English Monarch, presumably George II. A panorama of Manhattan, at the lower right, completes this famous design. Although cartographically the map was rather outdated, its publication reflects German interest in the area and the enduring qualities of one of the most decorative and informative maps of any period. Two repaired tears just affecting printed area but overall a good example.
