Abraham Ortelius' finely engraved, detailed and important map of the British Isles, from the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum ..." generally regarded as the "first modern atlas". Derived from Mercator's wall map of Europe and, unusually, shown with north to the right of the page, the depiction of Scotland and north west England is of remarkable accuracy, whilst that of Wales, south western England and Ireland less so. The map is well detailed and adorned with scrollwork, elegant typography, vignettes and other decorative features. A good example of a famous map from a Latin text edition of the 'first modern atlas'. Minor lower centrefold spilt repaired not affecting print.
