Panorama Del Canale Di Panama
|
An interesting lithographed panorama of the Panama Canal as seen from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Marchisio's name appears as the lithographer. The map was drawn by Professor Giosellino Peverelli and edited by Cesare Pimercati. The Panama Canal was first suggested in the sixteenth century, but politics interfered and it wasn't until the nineteenth century, prompted by Alexander Humboldt's survey work and the gold rush in California, that the canal finally became a reality. The canal was built in two stages; the first between 1881 and 1888 by the French company headed by De Lessops, already renowned for his involvement with the Suez canal, and the second stage between 1904 and 1914 when the Americans' completed the canal's construction. The panorama's style suggests that this is a proposed view completed prior to the canal itself.
