Jamaica / Barbados

Known as "John Speed's" map, this map appeared in the posthumous edition of "Prospect Of The Most Famous Parts Of The World" published by Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell in 1676. This edition included additional maps of the colonies and areas of topical interest to English readers. Engraved by Francis Lamb, these detailed maps give a good indication of the mountainous and forested nature of the islands. Place names are restricted mainly to the coastlines, although Jamaica is shown divided into its Precincts. An English text on the verso describes the islands. With both cartouches surmounted by the Royal coats of arms, this is an attractively coloured example.
