The West-Side Of London-Bridge / The East-Side Of London-Bridge
|
A dramatic and boldly engraved large view showing both sides of old London Bridge, with its ramshackle collection of buildings that had been constructed over the ages. A fascinating history mentions that the northern section, one third, had been destroyed by fire in 1633. The anonymous writer maintains that, "There is no object (after ye Church of St.Pauls) can conduce more to ye glory & Ornament Of The Renowned City of London". A poem also celebrates the bridge from the point of view of Neptune, ending with: "When The Cerulean God these things survey'd, / He shook his Trident and astonish'd said, / Let the whole Earth now all her Wonders Count / This Bridge of Wonders is Paramount."
