A Dutch re-engraving of Guillaume De L'Isle's important map of 1708. The map shows the long range of "Montagnes De Lupata Nommees Par Les Cafres L'Epine Du Monde" - the "Backbone Of The World". De L'Isle adds plenty of textual information including the location of tribes, kingdoms and the gold and silver mines. To the south "a river without end" is clearly depicted. Coastlines are generally well defined although internal detail is mainly fanciful. A little marginal staining but otherwise a good example of one of the few larger scale maps of southern Africa at this period of early European engagement.
