L'Amerique Septentrionale Et Meridionale ...
|
An apparently unrecorded state of Giles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy's four sheet map of the Western Hemisphere, with the added imprint and address of Delamarche. The map describes precisely the extent of knowledge at 1760 but has not been updated so the Pacific northwest, with the reference to Martin D'Aguilar, is particularly historic. Nevertheless, the map has been produced with attention to detail showing the boundaries of exploration with little embellishment. An inset at lower left shows the Arctic regions with perceived waterways and coastlines tenuously dotted, whilst the west African coast is visible far right. A large title cartouche occupies the lower right corner. Printed on four separate sheets joined with minor repair to the meeting of folds, and with a mixture of original and later colour, this is an interesting and rare map by one of the most important families of eighteenth-century French cartographers.
