A large and detailed French map of Africa produced during a key period in the continent's history, as European knowledge of the interior was increasing dramatically and cartographic techniques were improving to display these advances. Brue's first edition of the map was published in 1822 and showed a vast empty space in the centre of the map. This up-dated 1833 edition shows the improved geographical knowledge and also includes many tribal names. A good example of French mapping of the period.
