Surriae Comitatus Continens In Se Oppida Mercatoria ...
|
Based on William Smith's map of the county, itself derived from a manuscript map by the renowned Elizabethan cartographer John Norden, from the late sixteenth century. This plate was added to the composite county atlas published by John Overton. It bears the imprint of its former owner, Peter Stent. Roads are shown and also the hills are given in profile. The "fairytale" Nonsuch Palace, built for Henry VIII, is shown as one of the "Howses and Manners of the King". Around the time of this publication, the Palace was given to Charles II's mistress, Barbara Villiers, and shortly after, about 1682, the Palace was demolished and the park divided. With old outline colour and margins restored, this is an important and rare survival.
