The County Of Buckingham, Surveyed In MDCCLXVI, VII, And VIII ..
|
One of the key maps of Buckinghamshire, Jefferys' four-sheet publication stands amongst the great large-scale county maps of the late eighteenth-century that represented England with unprecedented accuracy and detail. All manner of geographical features are made visible through crisp engraving, original outline colour and an exhaustive key. Distances, landowners, Roman sites, even the relative importance of towns and villages are included without confusion or clutter. A cartouche incorporating a view of Eton college occurs lower left, above which is situated a town plan of Buckingham. This is an example of the second edition, published by Rob. Sayer in 1788. Printed on four sheets joined, laid on canvas, with repair to old folds. Some overall browning, nevertheless an acceptable example.
