Folio. Title-page printed in red and black, 35 numbered sheets of double-page or double-sheets joined to form 23 copperplate engraved maps with original outline colour. Half-calf and pink marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, black morocco on spine, corners expertly reinforced with new calf gilt. A good example of the first edition of a popular atlas containing very large-scale maps, many multi-sheet, after Samuel Dunn, John Rocque, J.B.D'Anville and Thomas Jefferys amongst others. Maps include the world (a double hemisphere with numerous surrounding diagrams and panels of descriptive text), each continent with large decorative title cartouches, North America (with excellent detail of the colonies and the interior), James Cook's chart of the St.Lawrence River, very detailed maps of England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland, and the first issue of Col.Ross's survey the "Course Of The River Mississippi". Despite the large size and many folds these maps have suffered, they are all in generally good condition.
