A Latin text edition of Jan Jansson's important map of the eastern seaboard from Cape Fear to Nova Scotia. The map is based on one published in 1630 by Johannes De Laet, a Director of the Dutch West India Company, who had access to their up-to-date records. Significantly, this was the first map to name Manhattan and New Amsterdam, Fort Orange, the Noordt Rivier (the Hudson) and Zuydt Rivier (the Delaware), just a few years after the Dutch colony of the New Netherlands was established. Jansson's copy repeats these features and is presented as an elegant engraving with large foliate titlepiece at top left. Frequently encountered on poor quality paper, this is an attractive example with good colour.
