Cary's Actual Survey Of The Great Post Roads ...

Cary's Actual Survey Of The Great Post Roads ...

An exquisite and rare book of the roads from London to Falmouth. This is Cary's first known atlas publication and was a collaboration of significance as Aaron Arrowsmith is credited as Surveyor. Arrowsmith was the first in a family line of distinguished mapmakers, working initially as a surveyor and starting his own map publishing business in 1790. His sons, also Aaron and Samuel, were succeeded by John, active until the 1870s producing large-scale maps of all areas of the world and atlases ranging from the renowned, large London Atlas to miniature and handy school and pocket volumes. John Cary became a significant and popular mapmaker active over the next fifty years. Map sheets with a little marginal discolouration and a couple of negligible repairs, but a charming survival with inns, and other useful features marked. The route from London to Falmouth achieved some importance at this time as Falmouth was the first mainland port of call along the Channel and of strategic importance in light of the present French threat.
