Recueil De Cartes Geographiques ... Voyage Du Jeune Anarcharsis
|
Quarto. Tp, ff.[i] table, pp.xlii (incl. Tp & table), 29 copperplate engraved maps and plans with one view and one numismatic plate. Jean-Jacques Bartholemey was a writer and numismatist. He became keeper of the French royal collection of coins and medals in 1753 and went on to achieve the accolade of membership of the French Academy. After the revolution he retained his post despite previous royalist connections, but was stripped of his fortune. His thirty year interest in the classics culminated with the publication of his accounts of the voyage of a descendant of the philosopher Anarcharsis in and around Greece, with a description of the many elements of Greek civilisation. This is the accompanying atlas volume with text, plates and maps by the geographer Jean-Denis Barbie De Bocage. Calf, re-backed.
