A New And Very Accurate Map Of South Britain Or England ...

A New And Very Accurate Map Of South Britain Or England ...

From "A Complete System Of Geography", this attractive map of England and Wales was engraved by Thomas Kitchin. Although the plate number 24 appears in the lower left corner, the map was the first in the work. For the 1752 edition, the plate number was changed to 7. Cartographically the map is an enlarged version of Herman Moll's road map, to whom acknowledgment is given in the title-page. The title cartouche is flanked by two female figures; Britannia holding her (here erroneously coloured) shield and another supporting a sailing vessel, perhaps signifying British naval ambition at this time.
